Measuring
The camera scan takes about three minutes, including reading the instructions. The guided tape method takes about eight minutes and needs a soft tape measure. Matching a suit you already own takes about five minutes and needs a flat surface.
No. All three methods are designed to be done alone. For the scan you prop your phone against something at about hip height; for the tape method every measurement can be taken on yourself. A second pair of hands makes the tape method faster, but it is not required.
Fitted clothing: a close t-shirt and shorts or leggings. Bare feet or thin socks. Take everything out of your pockets. Loose clothing is the single most common reason a scan comes back wrong, because we cannot see where your body ends.
If you have a phone and a clear wall, use the scan — it is the fastest and it gives us a silhouette as well as numbers. If you have a tape measure and would rather be in control of every number, use the guided tape. If you own a jacket and trousers that fit you well, matching them is the most reliable of the three.
Every screen in the guided method has an "I am not sure" option. Choosing it records the measurement with low confidence and sends a note to the tailor who reviews your profile. It is always better to flag a measurement than to guess at it.
Yes. You can edit any measurement from your account at any time, and every change is kept as a new revision with a date. Orders already in production keep the measurements they were cut to, so editing your profile never disturbs a suit that is being made.
The scan
No, not unless you ask them to. The scan runs in your browser: the pose model is downloaded to your device and the images are processed there. We receive the numbers, not the pictures. If you want a tailor to look at your silhouette you can tick a box to save the two photos to your account, and you can delete them again with one click.
It depends on your photos: the lighting, how fitted your clothing is, whether your whole body is in frame, and how square you are to the camera. Rather than quote a number we cannot promise, we do two things. A tailor reviews every profile before we cut, and anything that looks out of proportion is flagged for a second look. And the Bronte Fit Guarantee means that if the first suit does not fit, we put it right free.
If your browser blocks the camera, or your device does not have one, the scan switches to uploading two photos instead — a front view and a side view — with the same guidance. If the pose model cannot be downloaded at all, we send you to the guided tape method, which needs nothing but a tape measure.
Because something in the result did not add up. The most common causes are standing too close so your feet are cut off, holding your arms against your body so we cannot see your waist, or wearing loose clothing. We always say which one it looks like, so you know what to change.
Yes. Your height is the ruler everything else is measured against — it is how we turn pixels into centimetres. Measure it against a wall if you are not sure; a guess of five centimetres out will move every other measurement with it.
Fit and sizing
It is the amount of room we add to your body measurements. Slim adds 8 cm at the chest, Tailored 10 cm, Classic 14 cm, with the waist, hip and sleeve following. Tailored is the one most men want: clean through the body with enough room to reach across a table.
No. There is no size to pick. Every jacket and trouser is drafted from your own twenty-one measurements, your posture and your fit preference. Two men with the same chest will get two different patterns.
If your first Bronte suit does not fit, we alter it or remake it free within 90 days of delivery, and we pay the shipping both ways. You send us four photos through Atelier Online, a tailor tells you what is happening and why, and we put it right.
Yes. The Fitting Room dresses a three-dimensional figure built from your own measurements in the suit you have designed, and you can turn it, change the light, and open or close the jacket. You can also place the suit over a photograph of yourself for colour and style — though for fit, trust the numbers rather than the picture.
That is normal, and we ask about it. If one shoulder sits higher we add five millimetres to the sleeve and shoulder on that side, and note it on the cutting ticket. The same is true for a stooped or upright posture, a prominent stomach, or a flat seat.
Making your suit
Three to four weeks from the day you order, plus shipping. The stages are drafting the pattern, cutting, sewing, finishing and a quality check, and you can watch each one on your order page with the date it happened.
A tailor. Every profile is reviewed by a person before any cloth is cut. If a measurement is flagged as low confidence, or looks out of proportion against the rest of your figure, we either adjust it and tell you why, or write to you and ask.
The canvas is the layer between the outer cloth and the lining, and it is what gives a jacket its shape. A half-canvas runs through the chest and lapel; a full canvas runs the whole length of the front. A full canvas moulds to your chest over a few years of wear. A half canvas is lighter, cheaper, and enough for most suits.
Yes, as long as we still have the cloth. Write to us with your order number and we will tell you before you pay. Cloth is bought by the length for each order, so on some fabrics we can, and on others we cannot.
Shipping
Standard shipping is free everywhere in the world. Express, which is a tracked courier and one to three days once your suit is finished, is $35. Alterations sent to the atelier ship free both ways on orders over $75; below that it is $12.
Outside the United States, the United Kingdom and the European Union you may. Duty and local taxes are set by your own country and are not included in the price. We declare the full value on every parcel, because under-declaring puts your parcel at risk.
Returns and alterations
A suit cut to your own measurements cannot be resold, so we do not offer a change-of-mind return on made-to-order garments. What we offer instead is the Bronte Fit Guarantee: if it does not fit, we alter it or remake it free within 90 days. Accessories and anything not made to your measurements can be returned unworn within 30 days.
Yes. Atelier Online takes any jacket, trouser or waistcoat, whoever made it. You choose the alterations, send photos, get an instant quote, and we send you a prepaid label. Turnaround is three to ten days at the atelier depending on the work.
Payment
We take card payment at checkout, and the order is only created once the payment is confirmed. Cloth is bought for your order in the days after that, which is why we cannot cancel once cutting has started — the order page tells you exactly which stage you are at.
Privacy
Your measurements are used to make your clothes and are visible to you and to the tailors who work on your orders. Photos from the scan are processed on your own device and are not sent to us unless you tick the box to save them. You can delete stored photos, or your whole account, from your settings at any time.
Shipping
Standard shipping is free everywhere in the world. Express is $35 and takes one to three days once your suit is finished. Duty outside the UK, EU and US is set by your own country.
Returns
Made-to-order garments are covered by the Bronte Fit Guarantee rather than a change-of-mind return. Accessories can be returned unworn within 30 days.
